Mallet Finger

What is the cause of mallet finger?

It is usually caused by an injury to the tendons ( tendons - are structures which connect muscle to bone and help in movement) which keep the last joint of the finger in a straight position. There are two opposing sets of tendons ( called the flexors and extensors) at the tip of each finger. The first set on the top of the finger helps in lifting the tip ( this movement is called extension and therefore this group of tendons are called extensors) and the second on the underside of the finger, help in lowering the tip of the finger ( this movement is called flexion and hence this group of tendons and muscles are called flexors). Hence injury to the tendon that helps in lifting the finger creates an imbalance of forces. This leads to drooping of the tip of the finger. These injuries can be seen with bony fragments. The tendon involved is called the Extensor Digitorum.

Texter’s Thumb

You see it everywhere you go, people text messaging each other, usually with the thumbs. Some can type almost as fast via the thumbs as they can with a keyboard. Some teens actually text up to one hundred times every single day. That's asking for trouble.

I don't mean some of the obvious troubles, such as getting into accidents or sexting. I'm talking about carpel tunnel syndrome, due to repetitive movements. Think about it; if you can get it from using a regular keyboard and/or a mouse, you can certainly get it from excessive text messaging.

Arm Slings – How to Apply Them

Slings are generally used to support an injured arm of someone that is sitting or able to walk. Slings can also be used as a treatment for broken ribs. Arm slings are usually made with a triangular bandage and most first aid kits should have one, and always be replaced once used. There are several different types of slings used. The first is the arm sling - This is used to provide support to the lower half of the arm in either of the two following positions, horizontal or having the arm slightly raised from this. The second is the elevation sling - which provides support to the upper half of the arm by having the hand in a well raised position. This can be used to help with fractures, to help reduce swelling, to help control bleeding, and for complicated rib fractures.

How You Can Train A Dog And Still Spoil Them As Well!

I was raised in in the Brazilian bush with working dogs. They were contained to kennels and were let off for a run around each day. My father trained them to herd our live stock but I don't ever remember seeing him train them. I do know that I was quite amused at what they could do.

With only a whistle and quick gesture, the dogs would run off to bring in the live stock, or stop dead in their tracks and lie down. They could keep the live stock moving into yards at shearing time or drenching. They always seemed to be loud barkers but they always did what they were told.

Osteoarthritis - It is degenerative disease of the joints in which the cartilage which provides padding becomes weak and gradually disappears causing pain and less mobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - It affects not only the joints but also muscles, tendons and other tissues of the body. It is due to an inflammation of the lining of the hands.

Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome at Home

Health care professionals are quick to let you know that surgery is the only effective remedy for carpal tunnel syndrome. Typically the symptoms of a disease are treated and not the source of the problem.

The cause of carpal Tunnel syndrome (CTS) is due to muscle imbalance in your forearm. Not all health care professionals recognize this.

Thumb Splints

When you move your wrist and fingers the muscles in your forearm are used to move them. If you open your hand or close your hand you are using muscles in your forearm.

Try grasping your forearm with one hand and then open and closed the hand whose forearm you have grasped and feel the muscles tightening and relaxing.

How To Eliminate The Pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Choosing a career as an accountant has spared me from most work related health problems. Atop my padded chair in a climate-controlled office, only an occasional paper cut or being punctured by a mechanical pencil stand as potential physical dangers. However, I have become painfully aware of several physical ailments that have affected me directly because of the way that I work. These ailments are known as "heel spurs" and "carpal tunnel syndrome."

Fortunately, simply changing some habits and doing certain exercises have allowed me to overcome both of these ailments. This article deals with carpal tunnel syndrome, which is an ailment that is common to accountants and others we work with.

Major Medical Plans – What Is Universally Covered?

There are three basic types of major medical plans. In terms of comprehensive coverage, consumers have the choice of first dollar coverage or standard coverage. Alternatively, consumers may elect only supplemental major medical plans. These plans only cover a percentage of medical expenses after certain limits are met. However, regardless of the type of major medical plan, there are some expenses that are, for the most part, universally covered. The following list is neither definitive nor all-inclusive. Instead, the list is intended as a general rule of thumb guideline as to what you can expect to be covered for under your policy.
